Welcome Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am pleased to introduce myself as the Grade 1 teacher of your child!  I am extremely thrilled to welcome your child on Tuesday and begin our learning journey together. I share your child’s excitement and anticipation!

Indoor Shoes

Please send in a pair of indoor shoes to be left at school (no laces, please). These shoes will also be used for Gym.

Important Bags and Agendas

Your child will be coming home with an important bag and a daily agenda. These agendas are an excellent organizational and communication tool to help ensure good communication between home and school. Please check these Important Bags and agendas daily, sign them and return to school. Feel free to write any notes regarding changes in dismissal routines, appointments or to ask questions.

Students will participate in gym class on Day 3 and Day 4.Students do not change for gym, but must wear appropriate clothing and shoes. In addition, on non-gym days, students will be engaged in various indoor and outdoor physical education activities as part of the daily 20 minute Daily Physical Activity requirement to promote the health and fitness of our students.

 Home Reading

Your child will be given a home reading duo-tang within the first weeks of school which they will bring home each day with a book to read at home. Your child will choose their own book from our leveled books based on their Kindergarten reading levell. Once the October reading conference is completed, these levels will be adjusted to ensure that your child is reading books at his/her appropriate reading level. Please have your child print the title of the book on the tracking sheet and sign your initials.

Word Work

Each week, your child will write 5 words of the week in their agenda. As part of their nightly homework, please help them practice these words. Some ideas on how to do this: ask them to use each word in a sentence; ask them to tell you words that rhyme with them; practice their spelling.

Birthday Books

Birthdays are a special day for children and we love to recognize them at school.  On your child’s birthday (or the closest school day before), please feel free to gift wrap a book, with your child’s name and birthdate written on the inside cover, and send it in your child’s Important Bag.  Your child will be able to unwrap it, we will read it as a class, and then add it to our classroom library.  This will take place of sending in treat and goodies that unfortunately do not meet the school board nutrition policy.

I look forward to working with you and your child this year, and take very seriously my responsibilities as your child’s classroom teacher. Please don’t hesitate to contact me any time during the year. The best forms of communication are through the agenda, e-mail (ndedrick@hwdsb.on.ca), or phone calls to the school.
